As Sir Ian McKellen is homosexual the words take on a whole new meaning.
Definitely one of the finest actors of his generation and awesome as Gandalf.

Are there, by the way, any classical style fantasies where the world the story happens in is a more modern one (meaning firearms, cars, airplanes, phones...)?

Heh, a quest to retrieve the sacred - insert something appropriate here - pistol or six shooter, perhaps hidden somewhere in the legendary ruined city beyond the mountains, the only gun which can kill the evil wizard... In some place where the technology level seems to be perhaps around the earlier parts of 20th century (or even modern, only then maybe in a world with less people, I would want the uninhabited or very sparsely inhabited forbidding swamps and mountains and scary forests nobody knows nothing about, and a lot less people might make those seem more likely in a world with easy transport and big earth moving and foresting machines, you'd need more reason than just 'scary' for why people have stayed away from them and no real need for the land or the resources yet might work) might actually be fun (handgun, lets make things as difficult as possible for the hero, a mystic sniper rifle might be a bit too easy...). Hero has his father's rifle on the quest, the wizard uses something like a machine gun, the faithful steed is an ugly looking but very reliable Jeep...

Hm. Spoofs may have been made, I think I have seen something along those lines in some description long ago, but used more or less seriously, no, at least I don't remember any.

Not that I can think of.

And yeah, that could get real interesting.
