So the next person arrested under this law should go after the police

and the DA with all legal means.  And everyone who's been convicted under it should raise every kind of hell possible.
They've just demonstrated that 'equal justice under the law' means nothing to them, that they will NOT enforce the law equally.

Chief Lanier, you've just demonstrated your lack of integrity, you're a sorry excuse for a lawman.
And the DA: you just flat suck; you've thrown your integrity(such as it was) in the trash.
