Armor: different strokes, as it were...

Years back, looking at some sci-fi and fantasy cover art, I suggested we take the artist, dress him or her in like manner, and run them through the Oklahoma woods for a few hours; it might give them the idea that a breech clout or fur/skin bikini, while attractive for some, doesn't give a hell of a lot of protection from the thorns and vines and bark and bugs and....

There has been this continuing argument about what Dejah Thoris should wear on the imdb board for the upcoming movie 'John Carter'. Now in the book she is, when first seen, describes as wearing only some jewelry. However, I have always been fond of the image of at least some sort of skirt thingy, slit on the sides perhaps, but covering that part of her bottom she sits on.

She is not a fighter (not in the books, anyway, although that seems to have been changed in the movie - pretty much what you'd expect) so armor is not necessary. However she does spend a lot of time in the wilds of Barsoom/Mars. Have you ever tried to sit on something like a rock on a hot day, while sweating even a bit, and not wearing anything to cover your buttocks?

Been there, done that. So every time I imagine the heroine as naked - well, she has to sit down from time to time, and she does ride a lot on the local horse equivalents, and I can't help but wince in sympathy when I think what that must feel like, if I imagine her dressed in nothing but that jewelry...

Yep, I much prefer to imagine some sort of skirt/loincloth for her. Upper covering depends on her cup size - in the book Dejah is describes with adjectives such as 'slim' and 'girlish', so I suppose that in the lighter gravity of Mars she actually might be feeling relatively comfortable even with bare breasts. But she really should have that skirt.
