If any one statement could sum up how screwed-up our tax system is,

it's this:
"I don't even do my tax returns anymore," he said. "I don't know any tax lawyer who does their own tax returns. The forms are Greek even to us."
When the specialists can't figure this crap out, then at least half of it needs to be thrown out. Preferably 3/4.

For a start, anyway.

Tax lawyers aren't tax accountants, however.

Their job (if you drill down to the guy in question's position) is doing things like estate planning or tax shelters.

Tax return preparation is a specialist job at that level - but "the specialists" who actually specialize in it can understand it just fine.

Tax lawyers are not, again, tax preparers. (And equally, tax preparers aren't the guys to ask about setting up your estate...)
